Looking for a vegan ankle boot you can style different ways this Veganuary? Veerah’s Hedy boots come with a detachable ankle strap with metal studs so you can either go for a classic, sleek boot style sans strap or pop the strap on for a slightly edgier look.

Veerah kindly sent me a pair of their black Hedy boots for review, plus I already have a pair of their glitter Hedy boots I won in a giveaway last year. The glitter boots are obviously perfect for the holiday season or when you need to make a statement, but I love the black boots for day-to-day style.

So, should you add the Hedy boots to your closet? Here’s how they stack up.

Veerah boots review

Comfort

These are comfy boots! I have to admit when I first saw the pointed toe I wasn’t sure as sometimes pointy boots can create the sensation of your toes being squished, but these are comfortable boots. My only tip with pointed toe shoes in general is to go up half a size for a little extra toe wiggle room.

They have an algae-foam based footbed for comfort, which feels extra comfortable.

The heels are a block heel and not too high (they’re a perfect mid height heel, in my opinion) so comfortable from this side, too.

The only downside I’d note is that these boots don’t have treads on the bottom so they don’t have a ton of traction, and I wouldn’t wear them out during the first snowfall of the year when the pavements are slippery (a mistake I almost made).

Style

The Hedy boots are sleek! Take off the detachable ankle straps and you have a slick, classic-style black heeled boot that will pair with anything from jeans to office gear to a nice dress. They’re ideal day-to-night shoes, taking you from the office to a night out.

But if you want to add a bit of a punk edge, simply pop the studded ankle straps back on.

I love that these boots have two looks.

Versatility

As I mentioned before, these boots are very versatile. Pair them with jeans, cords or a skirt. Personally, I love black but there are a range of other neutrals to choose from: gray, brown and white.

Or, if you love a bit of bling, there’s the Hedy glitter boot! These are perfect for pairing with a Christmas or New Years outfit, or if you’re just going out and want a bit of sparkle.

Materials & Sustainability

The black, gray and white Hedy boots are made of premium vegan leather, while the brown boots are a soft vegan faux suede, and the glitter boots are made of recycled materials.

Every Hedy boot has an algae-based foam cushioned footbed.

Veerah is a 100% vegan company and they’re PETA approved vegan. They use as many sustainable materials as possible in their shoes, ranging from apple and bamboo vegan leather to recycled vegan leather (used in the Hedy glitter boots) and water-based vegan leather.

The Hedy boots are lined with Tencel, a biodegradable cellulose fiber made from trees.

More

The boots are named after Hedy Lamarr and I’m here for it. Fun fact: when I was a child, I had a collection of paper dolls of Golden Age Hollywood actresses, and Hedy Lamarr was my favourite, because I loved her hair. At the time she was on screen, she was called “the most beautiful woman in the world”.

What I didn’t know until now, thanks to Veerah, was that she was very smart an incredible inventor, too! From helping Howard Hughes design a more aerodynamic aeroplane to inventing a bouillon cube which, when dropped in water, made cola, Lamarr loved inventing.

Her biggest contribution to modern life was what she termed “frequency hopping” and which she invented in collaboration with composer George Antheil. She hoped it would help the Allied war effort, but it wasn’t picked up by the Navy until decades later. However the concept underpins many aspects of modern life we take for granted – namely Wifi, GPS and Bluetooth!
