Product Review Process: How We Select & Review Products

The Vegan Word is first and foremost a vegan site, so all products we review are vegan. This means they are free from the following ingredients/materials (including but not limited to):

  • Meat
  • Dairy
  • Eggs
  • Gelatin
  • Honey
  • Leather
  • Fur
  • Wool
  • Silk
  • Mohair
  • Beeswax
  • Lanolin
  • Animal-based collagen
  • Carmine
  • And any other animal-derived products

Furthermore, all products we review are cruelty-free, meaning they weren’t tested on animals, nor did they pay another company to test them on animals.

**Note: some cosmetics brands are engaged in the practice of vegan-washing; whereby they label products as “vegan” (they don’t contain animal-derived ingredients) when they test products on animals. We find this practice abhorrent and misleading and we stand firmly against it. All products are checked to be free from animal products and not tested on animals.

We are regularly approached by brands for partnerships and turn most down because their products aren’t vegan.

Sometimes companies change their formulations, rendering previously vegan products no longer vegan. If you encounter any of these, please contact us ([email protected]) so we can remove them from the site.

Further considerations

After ensuring all products are vegan, we prioritize products which are from 100% vegan brands, and give extra credence to brands run by individuals from marginalized communities (including for example ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+, women and/or people with physical or mental disabilities).

We furthermore prioritize products which are eco-friendly and from brands which treat workers fairly.

After analyzing the ethics of brands, we review a product’s durability and quality. We endeavor to test all products personally, but where this is not possible, collate and analyze reviews from across the web to ensure the most complete analysis of reviews possible.

How we make money

Sometimes we use affiliate links to brands we review, which means we get a commission, with no extra cost to the purchaser. We only recommend products we personally use and love, or products we would love to have.
